Abstract

Functions, design, space, price and material used to build up a furniture were an important features need to be considered by customers. High price and lack of space are some limitations that faced by students at hostel or other customers that live in a small house in buying furniture. So, this study is conducted to overcome those problem by designing an adjustable laptop table with "do it yourself' (DIY) concept for ease of handling, multipurpose function and can be sell at an economical price. In this study, a laptop table was combined with a book shelves by applying modern and contemporary design, that suit with modern lifestyle. Laminated particleboard and particleboard were used as main material, as they have excellent properties such as cheap, good machining properties and light. A set of questionnaires were distributed to seventy correspondents (twenty lecturers and fifty students). Results show that sex of correspondent may influence the rating on types of material used and the application of DIY concept only. Meanwhile, for the effects of correspondent's profession and phase of age, there are no significant differences on the rating of the product. Overall, this adjustable laptop table is suitable to be commercialized in market.
