Understanding riba: a case study of Muslim people in Kg Melayu Subang / Nurul Hanis Murad

The issue of riba is an important issue in Muslims daily life. It may already be understood by some Muslims, but the society at large taking this issues easily. Riba is an absolute prohibition by Allah SWT. It creates a monopoly in society, in which the wealthy are rewarded for their money, while the poor are forced to pay more. This will be unfair to the B40 income group and, at the same time, it will have a negative impact on the human community. This research aims to investigate and identify the knowledge and understanding regarding riba among Muslim people in Kg Melayu Subang, how their awareness of usury activities conducted in their daily transactions, and exposure about the prohibition of riba. The researcher adapts qualitative method through interview technique that was conducted among Muslims people in Kg Melayu Subang. The interview was perfomed through Whatsapp call Application and Google Meet Platform due to Movement Control Order and this COVID-19 pandemic. The research has found that, most of the respondents have the knowledge regarding riba but some of them who are lacked of understanding, unaware about that prohibition and confused with practice of riba in their daily life, especially those related to banking transactions. Thus, the researcher recommends that for further research, it is hoped that everyone should take this matter seriously as finding the halal one is mandatory upon every Muslims.
