Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between the socio-economic status (SES) and reading comprehension performance of a group of Form One students in schools of Malaysia. Various studies have been conducted in the past that examined the relationship between reading comprehension and SES, reading comprehension and the students’ reading schemata and so on. Previous studies have shown that there is significant relationship between SES and reading comprehension performance of the students. The outcome of this study, showed a positive correlation between these two aspects. In addition, two sets of questionnaires are used in order to gather the information on the students’ reading comprehension performance, their SES background and their reading routine. ‘Parametric Correlation (Pearson Product-Moment) is used to analyze the data collected, whether the correlation between SES and reading comprehension performance is positive, normal, or negative. Analysis of the data showed that there is a relationship between students’ comprehension performance and their SES.
