MUC450 : Elementary music composition / College of Creative Arts

This course exposes students to the fundamentals of music composition. Students will learn the basic techniques of writing an original melody over a diatonic harmonic progression. In utilizing these techniques, students will be able to develop melodic ideas over different styles of music. Additionally, students will also be exposed to initial processes of structuring a composition such as sketching, listening and visualizing. The course also emphasizes on how musical and extra-musical elements complement each other to produce a lived experience of a particular compositional piece. At the end of the course, students are expected to produce a basic original composition from a pre-compositional sketch.
