Abstract

The project involves utilizing the moku zogan technique to create Kelarai woven patterns on a console table, seamlessly blending the intricate artistry of Japanese woodworking with the traditional craft of Kelarai. The objective is to showcase a cross-cultural design that harmonizes the elegance of Japanese craftsmanship with the intricate patterns of Kelarai weaving. Rooted in the fusion of Japandi and Modern styles, this furniture piece represents a contemporary approach to design, combining the simplicity of Japanese aesthetics with the richness of Kelarai patterns, thus offering a unique and visually compelling piece to the audience. The resulting piece not only embodies a cross-cultural narrative but also serves as an elegant and functional representation of the shared artistic heritage between Japan and Kelarai in Malaysia. Selecting a Kelarai motif proposal is a comprehensive process that begins with a close observation of the surrounding flora, fauna, and abstract elements. The intricacies and patterns found in nature and the Kelarai culture serve as a foundation for this endeavor. Following this initial phase, meticulous research is conducted to delve into the cultural and historical significance of the chosen motifs. Understanding the stories, traditions, and symbolism behind these elements in the Kelarai context is essential.
