VCS551: Art Criticism / College of Creative Arts

This course addresses fundamental, theoretical, and practical questions that result from a view of art as a powerful social and cultural force. By addressing these questions, the student will be able to examine their own and others' aesthetic values and art criticism as a means of understanding art and to advance multicultural and cross-cultural understanding. A wide range of criticism strategies will be introduced for interpreting and building multi focal meanings that address both the individual and shared experience of visual communication. An underlying premise of the course is that interpretation of visual information is directly affected by what we know, and by the physical, psychological, and socio-cultural surrounding in enhancing knowledge and critical thinking.
