Abstract

The Malaysian Cinema course introduces students to the history and development of the Malaysian film industry beginning from the Pre Golden Era to Contemporary Era. This course emphasizes an understanding of the historical, socio-cultural, commercial, and aesthetic contexts, all of which influence the film industry. This is to train the student’s understanding of a film’s narrative and visual structure and its place within established historical traditions. Throughout the course students will also learn to develop an appreciation of the representative work of leading filmmakers and its reception. By the end of this course, students are hoped to demonstrate their cinematic historical understanding and skills of analysis, while at the same time being able to discuss the transformation of cinematic development, from technology to cinematic genres, culture, and traditions.
