Abstract
This course describes and discusses the development of Eastern and Western contemporary arts in a critical manner. This involves the arts writings in Malaysia as well as international. Apart from understanding art from various aspects such as meaning, concept and philosophy in arts, the students will embrace understanding in producing alternative paradigm in contemporary art via holistic appreciation model of intergraded approaches which are historians, critics, artists and art observers. At the same time, the course will explore key issues in contemporary design practice as it relates to social, economic and political contexts. Topics will be examined through reading, writing and discussions and projects to address contemporary design challenges. Students will critically review philosophies and thoughts which inform contemporary design practices towards greater consciousness for application in practical design practices.
