Abstract
Writing for Academic Purposes provides practice in writing organized, well-developed prose for a variety of purposes and audiences. The course is structured around the different patterns of development in prose. It begins by introducing students to the elements of good writing and the characteristics of well-formed paragraphs. Students are given descriptive writing tasks before progressing to expository essays using different patterns of development and finally to argumentative and persuasive writing. The course offers students opportunities to write from their personal experience and to write in response to readings. It also provides them with practice in incorporating information and evidence from various sources into their own writing.
