Abstract
This course surveys the development of children’s literature from its oral folk tale beginnings through nursery rhymes, fables, modern fantasy and fiction. Students will be exposed to poetry, prose, illustrations, elements of fiction and literary genres. They will also be looking at the selection of appropriate literary materials for children. Apart from that, this course will also address the pedagogical issues involved in the teaching of literature in primary classrooms through the study of various techniques and classroom approaches that would be useful for English teachers. Last but not least, this course will discuss the component of Contemporary Children’s Literature (CCL) in Malaysian primary schools and expose students to the various texts used in the program and other implementation issues.
