Abstract
The planning of roads for their construction or improvement is rightly regarded as one of the most effective ways of promoting economic development of a country. This thesis is an attempt to trace road development in Peninsular Malaysia from its beginning in the 1800s to the present day. This thesis also discusses the organisational structures of road administration, road construction methods and the finances involved in constructing roads before and after independence.
