Abstract
Building conservation is very special values that need to secure from being lost. It is because; most of the architecture from the conservation is really hard to be noticeable nowadays, in Malaysia, the conservation building, most of them are shophouses can easily be seen in Pulau Pinang, Melaka and Perak. In this study, interview has been conducted to inspect the building conservation in mostly in Pulau Pinang. From the interview, the historical value of the conservation buildings and the future planning can be obtained. Expertise is the main items that need attention from every conservator. The main point to conserve is to bring the property to its originality. That's why, expertise and conservator is the main person to head a conservation restoration work. Material Is also importance to maintain in every conservation work. Most of the factory nowadays, did not manufactured conservation materials due to the conventional construction that brings a lot more benefits. Public should be exposed to this matter so that they will also aware about the conservation and the problem that the conservation industries are facing now. Education should be the best way to help the conservation industry. Wildlife conservation, water / fuel conservation and energy conservation is also need to help our country to maintain in every sector. An authority is the main body to help our country to conserved things better. Without the old buildings, we could never learn on how to build modern buildings now. Before practicing building conservation, one including an architect, building contractor, planner or anyone who has the interest in saving an historic building must have a broad understanding of the field itself. This is of course to ensure that any action carried out during the conservation work is properly performed and is in accord not only with the building requirements but is within the scope of contemporary knowledge of the subject. The main purpose of this paper is to study the common problems of historic buildings in Malaysia and to understand the various shortcomings in the implementation of proper conservation schemes.
