Abstract

JKR ( Jabatan Kerja Raya) started on 1872 and lead by Major J.E.A McNair. There is a story behind the construction of JKR. On 1872, the trading between England, India and china, they need a safe station to use as a place to repair their ship. Fortunately, they found Pulau Pinang ask the Sultan of Kedah to give up the right of Pulau Pinang to them an d they managed to get that island trough a treaty. In 1825, through the Anglo-Dutch Treaty, Malacca was reverted to British through the exchange of Bencoolen Rafel in 1819. They make a treaty with Sultan Hussien and Temenggong Abdul Rahman to give up the right of British to Singapore. These three territories Penang, Malacca and Singapore formed the Straits Settlement in 1826.
