Abstract

Family background is one of the factors that has been suggested to be influential in the learning of the English language among secondary school students of today. The general aim of this study therefore is to find out the relationship between both which might help in improving the students language learning and performance.
The study begins with a discussion on the position of English in Malaysian schools, the role of the teachers at school and the family at home. It is important to see the close relationship between the learning the English language among students and family background. It is important too to make known to everyone on how family background influences the learning of the English language. The instrumentation used are questionnaires, a classroom observation and the teachers’ remarks on the students’ oral and written performance.
