Abstract
This research investigates the effectiveness of using pictures in teaching the writing skill in an ESL classroom. It was carried out as a case study of Year 5B students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Nyireh, Besut, Terengganu. They were of an intermediate group of year five.
The researcher distributed questionnaires to 30 pupils and four teachers. Besides, interviews and informal conversations were also carried out to find the teachers’ views on the topic.
A major finding is that students and teachers preferred to use pictures in their teaching and learning. Most teachers agreed that the students’ performance in learning English would be improved when they used pictures as teaching materials in the lesson. In other words, the use of pictures could motivate and inculcate the enthusiasm towards learning the language.
The findings recommend that the teachers take a serious consideration in stimulating the students’ interest towards learning. Thus, pictures could be one of the stimulants and should be used effectively in the learning process.
