Abstract
This study concentrates on the students’ attitude towards reading. It is to confirm that their reading attitude contributed to the lack of vocabularies and low academic performances.
This is also to encourage and develop reading among the students. At least, they could realize the importance of reading as an intellectual skill that will enhance their academic performances and for success in future.
The teachers also can aware to some of the hindrances and sensitive to the needs of their students in enhancing their positive attitudes towards reading.
The sample comprised of 40 students of year Five, 20 teachers and the headmaster of the school. They include both males and females. The subjects were enrolled in randomly.
The questionnaire to the students were administered during the co-curriculum activity on Saturday. The teachers were to answered 10 open-ended questions based on their experienced and observation to the students during the classroom activities
and the library period. While the headmaster was to answered a semi-structured interview questions to obtain his point of view, comments and suggestions towards the students attitude towards reading.
Based on the finding of this survey, most of the students did not feel the joy of reading. They prefer to play games and watching television rather than reading. More than half of them realized the reading values, but if they read, they have to sacrifice their fun and enjoyment activities. This really burdens them
The teachers also did not deny that these students prefer to play and doing other activities rather than reading. They also love to have fun and enjoy themselves during the library period. They made request going to the library because they feel that the library is the place for talking, playing and interrupting their friends. The teachers also agreed that most of these students are with negative attitude towards reading, lack of vocabularies and also with low academic performances.
The headmaster also realized that these students have a negative attitude towards reading. But, he still had optimistic hopes towards them. Some activities were implemented to attract, develop and encourage the students’ interest in reading. It is hope that it will bring positive changes to these students.
