Abstract
Television can be a very useful tool in language teaching since children have been evidenced to acquire language from just watching it without any formal instructions. The aim of this study is to investigate if this applies to secondary school students as well; whether or not they could learn English from watching television. Thus the study determined if television could motivate the students, as well as help them to improve their pronounciation, vocabulary, listening skills and grammar. The survey was conducted at SMK Sultan Sulaiman to obtain information on how many students actually do learn from television. A total of 62 respondents were selected in this study. They were given a set of questionnaire to give their feedback. According to the findings, television does affect students’ motivation when it comes to learning English. It helps improve vocabulary for students who watch television and pay attention to what is said. As for pronounciation, almost all the students agree that they can learn pronounciation from television, provided they could hear it clearly. The next item is listening skills, and in the main, the students do think their listening skills can be improved from watching television and last but not least, they think that television uses correct grammar, at least most of the time.
