Abstract

The search for the best learning methodology to be implemented on the Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) students has always become one of the popular subjects of discussions among scholars throughout the years, even until recently. Several methodologies are used in the English as Second Langugae (ESL) classroom, though most of us are well-informed that university students are more likely being given with individual-assessed assignments most of the time. The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of implementing collaborative and cooperative learning in ESL classrooms through the viewpoints of the Part 8 TESL students of the Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam. A set of 50 set of questionnaires were distributed among the Part 8 TESL UiTM students. The questionnaire was divided into four sections. It will be focus on the Part 8 TESL UiTM Shah Alam students' perceptions of collaborative and cooperative learning effectiveness on their understanding during the lessons in classrooms, and also how these methodologies work as a tool to inculcate good team work among the students when working in groups. The overall research findings show that the students have their own views on these methodologies, in comparison with the research hypotheses proposed for this study. There are some limitations in this study such as time constraints and samplings. For future research, some of the recommendations made in this study can be further explored to enhance and add value to this research area.
