Maintenance management of roofing system for old shophouses / Mohd Ariff Ishak

Old shophouses building is an attraction to welcome tourists to Malaysia. The shophouses building have uniquely architectural value on the facade and it has evolution. The main function of old shophouses is commercial activity for floor level and building use the next level as place to live in. Nowadays, awareness of public, building owner or building lessee and roof contractor towards old shophouses is lack. This is because their mentalities that old building should be demolish and replace with new building which give them more profit. This study will carry out the defects at flat roof and pitch roof of old shophouses to identify appropriate methods and techniques of maintenance work for roofing system of old shophouses building and to make suggestion and recommendation the best maintenance. Old shophouses at secondary heritage zone of Kuala Lumpur have improper roof maintenance. Parties involve in roof maintenance such as Kuala Lumpur City Hall, building owner, building tenant and roof contractor should give more attention to retain and maintain the roofing system. All parties should cooperate to make sure that the old shophouses should have proper roof maintenance^ retain the architectural style and value.
