Abstract

This study grew out of a feeling of need to see the differences between students in terms of their learning styles. These differences are important for teachers to understand. It is hoped that teachers will employ learning style information to assist students in becoming more aware in their own learning patterns. This study discusses students’ styles of learning English at Sek.Keb.Kua. The purpose of this study is to find out the student’s styles and preferences in learning English as the second language. The findings were derived from the students’ point of view and suggestions. Teachers are hoped to realize these differences and create a balance in their teaching process, which later will help students to become independent learners in the future. The hypothesis of this study is that different students have different learning styles. The population of this study was 120 students from Year 4, 5 and 6 of Sek.Keb.Kua. A simple random sampling was used to obtain a sample of 50 students as respondents in this study. Relevant questionnaires acquiring responses on strategies for learning through the four basic skills and expanding vocabularies were given. The findings are important for teachers because they can gain a better understanding of the characteristics and attitude of the learners. They can better planned more challenging learning activities to keep up the student’s motivation to learn.
