Abstract

Public Works Department (PWD) established in 1872 and directed by Major JFA McNair. Events that lead to the formation of the PWD began early in 1872 when the
British East India Company (the trade between England, India, and China) require a good station to improve their trading ships in Penang. PWD functions as a technical agency of the Malaysian government. PWD is responsible for performing development projects and infrastructure maintenance to various ministries, departments, statutory bodies and state governments such as roads, water supply, buildings, airports, ports and jetties to meet national needs.
