Abstract

This project aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of the teaching and learning process (PdP) by developing an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled seed germination rack, known as the Intelligent Seed Hub (ISH). This Problem-Solving Project (PPM) was implemented using the Design Thinking 101 method, which involves six main processes: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, and Implement. The innovation was developed through a structured process involving brainstorming, persona profiling, SMART analysis, user behaviour assessment (5W1H), SCAMPER, and the House of Quality. The objectives were to increase seed germination rates by up to 80% and to shorten the time required for uniform germination to less than five days. The ISH underwent four phases of testing and demonstrated significant improvements: seed germination rates increased up to 23.8% for green beans and 37.6% for rice. The germination period was reduced, respectively, from seven days to four days for green beans and to five days for rice. In addition, these outcomes contributed to improved seedling quality, reduced laboratory and labour costs and increased user satisfaction and confidence. The long-term impact of the ISH innovation includes cost savings in operational expenses, enhanced support for subject-related projects and research and efficient utilisation of laboratory space. With a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6, the ISH innovation is ready for broader implementation and standardisation across UiTM branch campuses. Furthermore, the invention has received intellectual property protection from MyIPO, underscoring its originality and reinforcing its potential for innovation, commercialisation, and broader market adoption.
