Abstract

Pesaka Lapan is a chair design that beautifully merges traditional Malay culture with the needs of modern furniture. Drawing inspiration from the Bunga Pecah Lapan motif, commonly found in Kelantanese songket, this design breathes new life into a cultural symbol, making it feel fresh and practical. Rather than preserving heritage only through decoration or museum displays, this project reimagines it as something people can use and experience in their daily lives. The chair is crafted from rattan, metal, and fabric, resulting in a sturdy yet lightweight frame that is both comfortable and user-friendly. Its low, floor-level design reflects traditional Asian seating styles that encourage a calm and grounded posture. Despite its sleek and minimal appearance, the design maintains a strong connection to tradition through carefully considered details and the use of natural textures. This project is a heartfelt effort to bridge the past and the present through design. It demonstrates how cultural stories can live not just through visuals, but through the way we interact with objects. Pesaka Lapan is more than just a chair; it is a meaningful attempt to bring heritage into modern homes, allowing tradition to be part of everyday life in a subtle, respectful, and engaging way.
