Abstract
BULAN is a modular coffee table inspired by natural textures and traditional craftsmanship. The design integrates sustainable materials such as woven nipa palm midrib sticks and shredded lidi nipah, which is processed into an MDF-like material. These elements are combined with laser-cut plywood and a steel frame, forming a structure that is both durable and aesthetically refined. The weaving panel is placed at the center of the table, showcasing traditional techniques while providing a strong visual identity. The shredded lidi nipah is dyed, molded, and used to form textured surfaces, adding depth and material richness to the overall design. This use of biodegradable and regionally sourced materials promotes eco-conscious thinking in modern furniture production. Modular in nature, the table components can be easily assembled and adapted for various functions, making it suitable for flexible living or working spaces. The design reflects the needs of professionals who value both functionality and artistic expression. With smooth contours and earthy tones, BULAN brings warmth into contemporary interiors without compromising modern aesthetics. The project reflects the principles of industrial design: problem-solving through material research, construction experimentation, and user-centered thinking. BULAN is not just a table-it is a statement piece that bridges tradition and innovation, offering a unique product experience rooted in cultural relevance and sustainability.
