Abstract

Motivation is the desire to achieve a goal combined with the energy to work towards the goal. There are four types of motivation concerned in Second Language Learning (SLA); Integrative, Instrumental, Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Therefore, a study has been conducted to identify the most workable type of motivation in learning English as Second Language (ESL) and it was found that instrumental type of motivation worked well in motivating the respondents of this study. It was also found that socio economic background of the family does not really influence the students’ motivation to learn English. It was also proven that students who normally are teenagers really attach to entertainment whereby they most preferred mass media and entertainment as their main source of exposure to learn English. This study also succeeded to prove that educated parents do motivate the students more. A total number of 70 lower secondary school students of a rural school were used as the subject of the study and when answering the research questions of the study 44students from all the three forms were selected from the good grades that they normally acquired for English in order to clarify the findings. The study also come out with the recommendations in how the results of the study could benefit the education field and how further research should be carried out in order to make the study more contributing to the related field.
