Abstract

Introduction: In Malaysia, pharmacogenomics become a new fields science of study, and not many Malaysians either professional health care, physician or academics really know and practicing it. Even though, pharmacogenomics actually has been practiced in most developed countries such as the United Stated America, United Kingdom and Switzerland, yet studies have revealed that pharmacists lack knowledge about the topic of pharmacogenomics, and are not prepared to implement it in pharmacy practice. This study further explores the level of pharmacogenomics knowledge, attitude and perception among final year pharmacy students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) as they are part of the individual that have a bigger role to play as they are the ones going to be a pharmacist in the not so distance future. Method: cross-sectional study among final year pharmacy students of UiTM and UI were conducted consisting of 42 questions in four parts was approved and validated by using pilot study. Result: Out of 170 total respondents, 84.1 % (n= 143) of students have adequate knowledge while only 15.9% (n=27) of students do not have adequate knowledge. Besides, 70.6 % (n=l20) of the students have a positive attitude, 26.5% (n=45) have a neutral attitude while only 2.9% (n=5) have a negative attitude towards the implementation of pharmacogenomics in pharmacy practice. Whereas, in term of perception 69.4 % (n= 118) of the students have positive perception, 29.4% (n=50) have neutral perception while only 1.2% (n=2) have a negative perception towards implementation of pharmacogenomics in pharmacy practice. Conclusion: In overall, final year pharmacy students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) have adequate knowledge, positive attitude and positive perception towards the implementation of pharmacogenomics in pharmacy practice.
