Abstract

Soda pulping is one of chemical pulping. In this study, we determine paper properties from Acacia Mangium. The purpose of this study is to determine suitability of using Acacia Mangium as raw material. The method that has been used to produce paper by using Soda pulping with different percentage of active alkali. The cooking is done by using Rotary digester at temperature 170°C for 3 and half hours. The percentages of active alkali that we use are 16%, 18%, and 20% with 0, 5000, 10000 r.p.m of beating. The paper testing is followed by TAPPI standard to determine mechanical properties of paper. The mechanical properties like tensile, tear, and bulk of paper are tested according to TAPPI Standard Method. The result shows that tensile indexs and tearing indexs increased with the increased of active alkali but for the bulk properties it decreased. The process improve the mechanical properties of paper like tensile and tearing but it is decreased the bulk of paper.
