Abstract
This course focuses on the role of visual arts in contemporary society. Discussions about what art is, its value, and the importance of art in community development. Topics include research on visual arts and media in the context of history, psychological perspectives, local craft and heritage, artists and their social roles, and exploration of various issues of art history, critical art, postcolonial and theory; to stimulate critical thinking and analysis. Students and lecturers visit museums, art galleries, archeological sites, traditional houses, graffiti art sites, murals, botanical gardens, theme parks, public sculpture areas, and cultural institutions; and research related to the role of visual arts in educating the public, building civic communities at the same time enhancing the aesthetic experience of the general public. Students learn the concept of Community-Based Art Education (CBAE) as the framework for this course.
