Abstract
This study explores the birth, marriage, and death customs of the Melanau community, with a focus on their cultural significance, preservation, and understanding. The study relies on the expertise and first-hand experiences of Datuk Aidan Wing, the Melanau's head of the community, and his daughter, madam Aidiana Aidan Wing, who is an active member of persatuan Melanau. Through face-to-face interviews, the study highlights the importance of these customs in fostering cultural understanding and appreciation. It emphasizes the need for respect, sensitivity, and cultural awareness when engaging with Melanau customs, while also contributing to the preservation of the Melanau cultural heritage. The interdisciplinary nature of the study allows for a broader exploration of the social and historical contexts surrounding these customs, incorporating insights from anthropology, sociology, history, and cultural studies. Additionally, understanding Melanau birth, marriage, and death customs facilitates cultural exchange and dialogue, promoting mutual respect and appreciation among different communities. Overall, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of Melanau customs, their significance, and their role in preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of the Melanau community.
