Abstract

The number of logs getting scarcer as further demands is placed on high quality logs to produce forest products. Products demand and rising log price have kept ahead of the declining quantity of available peel able logs. As the price of logs increases, higher yields of primary products from each unit of wood become necessary. Since plywood and veneer manufacturing industry resulted in diminishing veneer volume at each point of production, applying methods of quantifying the wood residue is desirable. A study was conducted with the objectives of determining veneer recovery rate from coconut stem. A total of 30 billets from five coconut palms with diameter ranging 23 to 33 cm were sampled in this study. The parameter of this study is height, tree and diameter class of palm tree. Average age of that palm is about 40 to 50 years old. On the average, sample billet of five trees produced 50.27 percent veneer, 30.32 percent roundup loss, 2.87 percent peeler core and 16.58 percent green clipping loss. Based on the statistical analysis, there are no differences at each portion, each tree and diameter class. For the further study, lathe setting should be improved to increase the veneer recovery. Proper conditioning before log peeling will increase veneer production.
