Abstract

This course intends to expose and help students to understand various types of law that can be imposed on media practitioners. The course is grounded in the belief that all communication students should understand that no society can call itself free unless it cannot only tolerates, but insists on freedom of speech and press. Law, regulation and ethic not only define the limits of acceptable conduct in the society; they also protect the rights of individuals who challenge those limits. The students will also be given a solid grounding in constitutional, statutory, administrative and common law as it applies to communication media. A student friendly, story telling approach uses cases to illustrate principles and predict change. High interest examples draw students into the world of media law by offering fascinating insights into the lives of the people who take part in the system.
