Abstract

This course provides an understanding of urban design as a field in the built environment. It begins by exploring the historical background of contemporary urban design and from there on theories; principles; and concepts are examined. Upon this understanding, the students then need to realise how urban designers in general look at the field from different dimensions: visual, functional, and environmental. This is essential so that students develop a critical thinking towards urban design. At the end of the semester, students should also understand the mechanisms governing urban design practice.
