Abstract

This report recapitulates the findings of an industrial training report performed at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Department of Finance Systems and Solutions (FSS) that aimed to deliberate on the internship experience, identify and prepare a SWOT analysis of the department, and propose recommendations for enhancements. This internship gave the students insights into the department's internal workings enabling them to use their skills and knowledge in the workplace and the opportunity to contribute to manifold assignments and tasks while developing valuable skills professionally that might be essential in the forthcoming employment path. The SWOT analysis imparted that FSS's strengths include a strong capability development in its diverse initiatives, training and program, and highly skilled labour. Yet, FSS encounters a few weaknesses, like mediocrity in event management and lack of coordination. Opportunities pinpointed for FSS comprise strengthening the positive brand image with the embedment of a sustainability agenda and technological advancement and digitalization. Threats to FSS include cybersecurity threats and the impediment of budgeting planning due to economic volatility. A few recommendations are highlighted to improve the FSS's operations and address its weaknesses. These include enhancing and escalating its capability development endeavours by investing in machine learning; leveraging skilled labour by investing and carrying out continuous training development for employee retention; pursuing a strategic approach and reevaluating their way of handling events and improving communication; initiating proactive action by improving its communication; maintain a sustainable by making sustainability a cultural norm in the workplace; to devise an in-depth digital approach aligned with the organisation's overarching aims and purposes; accentuate cybersecurity awareness and literacy to alleviate threats and avert cybersecurity calamities, and consider a financial governing strategy that makes room for quick adjustments. Ultimately, the internship's outcome revealed insightful details regarding how the department operates and indicated areas to be enhanced. FSS may conquer its weaknesses and attain its targets for future growth by observing suggestions laid in the report.
