Abstract

This course exposes students to the Malay cultural heritage. It introduces the Malay cultures in relations to the adat and beliefs within its social landscape. Key topics that will be highlighted are the historical overview of “Melayu”, the Raja-raja Melayu and Kesenian Istana, the Malay adat and beliefs, the festive seasons of the Malays, types of the Malay dances, games, martial arts, costumes and music. Students are hoped to espouse the understanding that the Malay cultural heritage is one of the most important identities that can be used as the foreground or background in any of their academic and non-academic practices. At the end of the course, students are to develop three (3) major assignments and a final examination worth 40%.
