Abstract
The course provides a general introduction to sociolinguistics. It introduces students to the role played by language in society by examining the influences of social, economic, historical, political and cultural environment in which the language is used. It also looks at how language reflects these aspects in the society. Students will be exposed to current language issues of a speech community in local and global context. They will also learn to apply basic research skills to collect linguistic data and analyse them from a sociolinguistic perspective.
