Abstract

The course provides a survey of current knowledge on individuals with special needs within the context of human growth and development across the life span. Content includes historical factors, characteristics, needs, educational strategies, and support services of and for individuals with special needs ranging from mild and moderate to severe levels of varying special needs. The focus of the course is on the exceptional child as a learner. These exceptional children can be categorized as children who are gifted and talented; children with mental retardation; children with visual impairments; children with hearing impairments; children with communication disorders; children with behavior problems; children with learning disabilities; children with multiple and severe handicaps; and children with physical handicaps. Includes is the impact of special needs on academic, social, and emotional performances.
