Abstract

Labour shortage is one of the major problem happen plantation. In plantation, worker is the main factor that contribute a lot in making the plantation been fully utilized and gain expected production in term of oil palm yield. Furthermore, the effects that can be seen when labour shortage happens are the declining of yield produced from the field. Besides that, labour shortage also can give risk and impact to the production of crude palm oil (CPO) by the mill. Last but not least, when this problem happen, it also can reducing the quality of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) and produce low quality of crude palm oil (CPO). A study was conducted to determine the level of labour shortage and the effects of labour shortage in the oil palm plantation and what are the most effects of labour shortage and lastly to investigate the relationships between the level of labour shortage and the effects towards oil palm plantation. This study has been conducted at TDM Plantation, Pelung Estate located in Setiu district, Terengganu with the sample of the population is 150 people and about 108 respondents to be analyzed among plantation worker. For this study, primary data was obtained through the survey questionnaire that was been given to the respondents. All the data from the survey have been collected and analyzed through descriptive, correlations and regression analysis. The result for this study obtained was the most significant effects because of labour shortage are the worker productivity and the field maintenance conducted. The highest correlation among the factors is worker productivity and field maintenance compared to the quality of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and the management operation. Based on the finding also shows that the acceptance towards the independent variables for this research (R2) is 8.4% and the rest is 91.6%. This study proved that there is significant relationship between fresh fruit bunches (FFB), management operation, worker productivity and field maintenance handling with the level of labour shortage in the oil palm plantation. As a conclusion, labour shortage can affect the worker productivity and the field maintenance of the plantation. A better solution need to be applied to overcome this problem to avoid higher loss for the plantation itself in terms of yield production of oil palm from the field and the quality of crude palm oil (CPO).
