Public awareness towards property nomination in heritage register in Perak / Mohammad Syazwan Zalani

The National Heritage Act 2005 is formed to provide a way of preservation, protection, interpretation and development of heritage property in Malaysia. Heritage property is broadly defined as any property that is of interest for architectural, historical, cultural, environmental, archaeological, paleontological, aesthetic or scientific value and includes archaeological and paleontological objects. Under the National Heritage Act, public can nominate their property as Heritage in the Heritage Register. The question is do they know about their rights to nominate, knowledge and steps of procedure and the process to nominate. For our best on this knowledge, there were less observation about public awareness and there is less research has been done, a survey has been conducted to discover the level of awareness of the public toward property nomination in heritage register and perspective of the Perak community on preserving heritage property. A sample of 50 resident of Perak has been collected by using questionaire and finding shows that most of the resident still not aware and lack of knowledge of the existance and steps of precedure of the property nomination, but 19% of the respondent have effort to preserve their property into Heritage Register, it shows that they key of raising awareness is more to education and new generation should aware that historical property has many advantages on identify most valuable teaching to our society and the future development for our country.
