Abstract
Quite often if not always, it is the occupants for no mistake of their own who fall victim to fire. Besides damage to their belongings and property, some occupants are burned to death for not knowing what to do in the event of fire. Even though high-rise buildings are provided with the most sophisticated fire safety features, assurance of safety to building occupants is questionable and held in doubt. Fire outbreaks occur as a result of "human factors", such as carelessness, negligence or simply a lack of fire safety awareness. In some cases, problems arise because the fire safety systems were developed on the basis of misconceptions on occupants' behaviour. Misconceptions happen because there is no proper data available on the level of knowledge of the occupants and they are generally lacking in knowledge of fire safety. The aim of this research is to study about the awareness of building occupant in fire safety for high rise building. This study focus on the residential building and is a building that of more than 7storey.This study is carried out on the following three objectives which include, identifying the level of knowledge of the occupants of high rise building on fire safety; to analyze the factors that influence the level of the users' knowledge on fire safety; and to suggest the best methods and ways to educate users on fire safety from observation and questionnaire.
