Workshop on online data collection / Seng Hui Zanne

(Connect’M) Conference 2021 was held from 17-19 August 2021 by University of Nottingham Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. It is an international conference related to the multiple disciplines of linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and education by connecting researchers from Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand in Malaysia. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was organised virtually via the ZOOM platform. Throughout the three days event, researchers presented their findings and plenty of knowledge transfer workshops were conducted to discuss the following topics: online data collection, effective grant writing, open science and corpus linguistics. The researchers from University of Reading Malaysia and University of Nottingham Malaysia shared various freely available web-based survey tools such as Qualtrics and formr in the workshop on Survey Questionnaire. The participants were exposed step-by-step on designing sophisticated questionnaires. Furthermore, the researchers from University of Konstanz introduced the Experiment Builder Gorilla and PsychoPy - online experiment tools to participants who were interested in creating an online behavioural experiment. The presenters showed the steps to set up online experiment tools, such as creating consent forms and questionnaires. The hands-on session with Gorilla focused on three different tasks: grammaticality judgement task, N-back/Flanker task, and vocabulary learning task. Overall, the conference and the workshops were successful in initiating collaboration among participants.
