Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the concentration of metals in Sungai Jengka (Kampung Awah area) and to estimate the potential health risks of metal exposure. Water samples were collected from three selected points and were taken three times. Metal concentrations were analysed using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (FAAS). The heavy metal concentrations in Sungai Jengka (Kampung Awah area) decreased in the sequence: Al > Fe > Cu > Zn. There are low potential non-carcinogenic health risks for the residents as the HQ values below than 1 (HQ<1). However, the presence of industrial activities along the river perhaps will increase the metal concentration and consequently increase the risk of metal exposure in the future. Perhaps a comprehensive study and regular monitoring considering the potential carcinogenic risks of metal exposure will ensure the river water quality for the long-term benefits.
