Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of English Panel in Sekolah Kebangsan Tok Jiring, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu. The effectiveness investigated was factors related to English Panel. They are the school and classroom "environments, teachers' teaching styles, school English Panel, their influence on the pupils' writing habit, school resource centre and on students' achievement. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was distributed to 40 Year Six students and to 11 ESL teachers from the school.
The following were the major findings of the study:
1.The students perceived their school as "successful" and "most successful" in developing good relationship between teachers and students.
2.Students also indicated they "agree" and "strongly agree" that the classroom environment motivates them to leam English and good relationship amongst them contributed to high performance of English.
3.A high percentage of the students (80%) indicated that activities such as develop natural curiosity and thinking skills and classroom discussion during English lesson help them to improve their English language.
4.Teachers' teaching style and teachers' behavior also contributed to students' high performance in English. About 80% of the students indicated that their English teachers "sometimes" and "always" give oral and written work, give homework everyday, explain lesson step-by-step, encourage classroom and group discussion, place great emphasis on discipline and show concern over students' well being.
5.The study also shows that there is a strong relationship between the quality of English materials in the resource center and students' performance in the language.
The findings suggested that factors related to English Panel contribute to the effectiveness of English language, particularly in writing performance amongst students of the school.
