Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of hand hygiene among nursing students at UiTM Puncak Alam. The study design selected for this study is cross-sectional study. The sample data obtained through convenient sampling procedure by using self-administered questionnaires of validated (Cruz & Bashtawi, 2016). Researchers distribute this questionnaire based on the sampling criteria that are to the undergraduate nursing students (Diploma and Degree) including resident and non-resident students. This research was conducted at UiTM Puncak Alam Campus with the 187 participation of the students. The sample size was calculated by using Raosoft Sample Size Calculator. Then, the data collection was done by distributing self-administered questionnaire, which consists of four sections to eligible respondents to identify the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of hand hygiene among nursing students. In order to analyze the data, researcher in this study use the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) including descriptive and chi square data analysis. From this study, the expected outcomes show that majority of nursing students (90.4%) have moderate knowledge regarding hand hygiene. This study shown that, the attitudes of nursing students towards hand hygiene was moderate (64.7 %) while 60.4% of the nursing students reported moderate practice towards hand hygiene. Overall from this study shown that moderate knowledge, attitudes and practices of hand hygiene among nursing student in UiTM Puncak Alam. This study also shown that there are a significant association between gender and attitudes, and between gender and practices. There is a significant association between educational level and practice towards hand hygiene. As a conclusion, this study shown that knowledge, attitudes and practice of hand hygiene are moderate among nursing students in UiTM Puncak Alam campus. Thus, efforts should be made by nursing department to improve and accomplish good knowledge attitudes and practices of hand hygiene.
