Abstract

As we know, pedestrian walkways are an important and useful facility for users to move to other places. Besides that, pedestrian walkways are also one of the categories in transportation. The purpose of pedestrian walkways to unsure that people can live without dependency on the automobile. Based on Juriah Zakaria (2014), a walkable place allows people to experience the city on foot pleasantly. This study is focused on the quality of pedestrian walkways at Georgetown, Penang. This study was conducted at a pedestrian walkway in Georgetown, Penang which is located in the center of the city and tourist area. But there are several factors that cause users to be dissatisfied while using the path such as damaged path, lack of shade, lack of safety element and uncomfortable. Therefore, the goal of this study to enhance the quality of pedestrian walkway in term of design, connection, comfort and safety based on the current condition of Georgetown Town Centre. In order to achieve that goal, there are objective that can achieve the goal of study which is to study the principles in designing the pedestrian walkway, to identify the basic criteria in pedestrian walkway designing and to give the recommendation to improve the function and qualities of pedestrian walkways. The survey method that has been used in this study are questionnaire and observation (Google Earth). Consequently, findings can produce SWOT analysis which is can identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Based on questionnaire survey, the findings indicated that most of the respondents were unsatisfied with the level of pedestrian walkways quality in term of safety, facilities and maintenance. Thus, at the end of the chapter there are several recommendations that have been proposed to improve the quality of the pedestrian to be more effective and useful. To be conclude, user is able to use the pedestrian path comfortably.
