Assessment criteria and guidelines for kompang formation competition / Mohamad Danial Mohd Nazrin

A music competition is a social event as well as a musical one, raising great interest in the community. A Music competition can involve different combinations of musical instruments in the world including vocals and they are contested in the form of solo or ensemble. Competitions are commonly held for the various traditional ensembles in Malaysia. One of the famous traditional ensemble competitions is Kompanelog competition. One of the major aspects of a music contest or competition is the assessment. Assessment criteria is important because it is used to justify and explain the assessment system to the performers, parents, r administrators. Therefore, this study aims to establish the assessment criteria and the guidelines for the kompang formation competition. The qualitative method was applied for this research. Interviews were held with respondents about the essential criteria required for kompang formation competitions and also the competition guidelines that can be used for the judges and the participants. The criteria of Paluan Kompang, formation, costume as well as the guidelines towards each of the particular criteria were the collected data that suggested by the respondents. The sub-criteria that underneath the Paluan Kompang criteria are arrangement of the rhythm/gubahan pola irama, variation of the paluan, tone quality, tempo, dynamic and paluan statik. The sub-criteria underneath the formation part are the pola lantai/formation, creativity (formation and movement), uniformity (movement) and suitability (movement). Last but not least, the sub-criteria underneath the costume part are the suitability and the uniformity.
