Abstract
This study was carried out to compare the method for determining caffeine in energy drinks available in Malaysia market by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and HPLC. The sample used were energy drink M, energy drink R and energy drink W. For the determination of caffeine by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, the caffeine was extracted by using liquid-liquid extraction technique using dichloromethane as the solvent. Meanwhile, for the determination of caffeine by using HPLC, all the samples were degassed and diluted with LC grade acetonitrile. The caffeine was measured at 270 nm for both methods. Based on the results' interpretation, the concentrations of caffeine by using UV-Vis spectrophotometric method were 187.50 ± 0.8359, 144.58 ± 0.6481 and 145.16 ± 1.6490 mg/L for energy drink M, R and W respectively. Next, the concentrations of caffeine by using HPLC method were 245.39 ± 15.491, 205.06 ± 6.6407 and 205.15 ± 3.7058 mg/L for energy drink M, R and W respectively. From the study, it was found that the measurement of caffeine in energy drinks by using HPLC is better than using UV-Vis spectrophotometer.
