Abstract
This paper reports on the Translation method which has been used for centuries all over the world. The focus is on whether it is still relevant to be used in language classrooms today or not. The purpose of the study is to find out the frequency of it’s usage in the classroom, while unveiling it’s strengths and weaknesses, and look for the answer why it is still widely used till now. From the findings, it is hoped that conclusion can be drawn and recommendations can be made so that the best outcome can be practiced in the English language classrooms. The target subjects of the study are English language teachers in the district of Hulu Terengganu. Based on random observations, it was found that this method is very popular in this district especially when it concerns the exam classes. The sample population is 35 teachers who were chosen through the Simple Random Sampling technique. The data were collected through three methods, the questionnaires, interviews and class observations. The study concluded that the Translation Method is relevant and it has definitely helped a lot in enlightening teachers’ burden of teaching and sooth down learner’s agony of learning. It is also recommended that the method be used in language classroom but together with “Common Sense” application. Besides that technical and location aspects must also be given consideration, so that it will help along in teaching and learning process.
