Abstract
This research will focus mainly on area conservation in the City of Georgetown, Penang (case study in area that traversed by Lebuh Ah Quee, Lorong Pitt and Lorong Soo Hong) and "how to make the urban heritage in the city centres fit to live in" or in other word try to create the city more humane environment as a new heart for the growing city. The focus is on Madrasah Hamid Arabi, which is located at Lebuh Ah Quee, one of the areas under conservation zone in Georgetown, Penang. There is an urgent need to preserve the local cultural and architectural heritage such as Madrasah Hamid Arabi (as the first Islamic religious school in Penang), which is being threatened by the rapid pace of development as a result of the booming economy. Many heritage buildings have been demolished to make way for new development and many will be disappeared unless a strong move is made to promote sustainable urban development. Action should be taken by the local authorities to preserve the Madrasah building in order to prolong the life of the building because it has a strong historical value as the early Islamic education in Penang.
