Abstract
To most people, buying a house is a complex decision; it involves more than just the sum of the bricks and mortar used to construct it. Housing industry has traditionally been supplier led, thus, the property overhang in the country is due to houses supplied are cookie cutter houses and not located at the right location. This study is carried out to examine the factors/attributes which house buyers placed importance to when purchasing a house, to determine if there is any association between demographic variables (income, age, marital status, gender) and house buying preferences and lastly, to determine the main source of information for house buyers when buying a house. This study utilizes the survey approach. Data was collected through the assistance of developers’ and financial institutions’ personnel. Systematic sampling was utilized to select house buyers from middle to high-end market in Kuching. The final sample consisted of 387 respondents.
