Abstract
The principle objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of field trip and its utilization in teaching writing. To achieve this objective, library research, questionnaire and interview was used to collect data.
This study was carried out for the purpose of identifying factors that contribute to the effectiveness of field trip in enhancing writing skills. Sekolah Menengah Tengku Mahmud II was chosen as the sample school. The factors investigated were the students' reaction towards field trip programme, activities the students adapted from the trip and, students' opinion of the field trip. Forty students were chosen from the population as the sample of this study and a set of questionnaire was given to these students. The responses were analyzed and presented in the form of frequency and percentages.
The findings of the study are as follows:
1.The students are 100% Malays and came from a low - income family.
2.Most of the students have joined field trip organized by school.
3.The students showed achievement and improvement in English Language subject in the final and PMR examination after the trip.
4.Field trip gave benefit and experiences to the students. It helped and motivated the students to enhance writing skills.
5.Field trip provided activities that expose the students to a various types of writing which they can adapt and adopt in preparing them in writing activities.
6.The students interested in joining any field trip that organized by then school which gave them self- benefit.
7.The finding of the research shown that field trip can help the students in Improving their writing skill.
8.The finding also shown the potential use of field trip and the strategies used by the students organising ideas in writing essay.
Various recommendations and suggestions in relating field trips to the writing activities were discussed. As a conclusion, field trip is not only suitable for the exposure needed in teaching writing but it provided an exciting and stimulating environment for writing as well as gaining other skills.
